IT CV Samples and Help - writing CVs for the IT industry

Writing your IT CV is challenging; you want your CV to stand out from other CVs and highlight your IT skills instantly.

To help IT professionals of all levels, See My CV interviewed a number of consultants from Jenrick IT, a featured recruiter on See My CV.

Jenrick IT, established since 1984, was one of the first IT recruitment consultancies to achieve ISO accreditation and have also been three time winners of the Sunday Times Top 100 Companies to Work For Awards. Furthermore, it has one of the lowest staff turnover within the industry and a consultant team who have worked within IT recruitment for 10 years.

From this interview we have put together an IT CV sample template for you to use and general points to consider when writing your CV for the IT industry.

Miriam Lee, Senior Business Development Consultant

"Excellent Presentation is key, maximum of 3 Pages, good clear content of work experience and capability. Include a brief testimonial from a respectable client you have worked for detailing your ability."

Testimonials are a great way to showcase what clients think of you. The testimonials can even replace a personal statement. Remember to highlight key achievements within your personal statement.

Richard Johnson, Business Development Consultant

"No more then 3 pages, clear structure in a logical flow with dates and bullet points, important information in bold, no spelling mistakes and be easy on the eye when reading."

AVIOD long-winded paragraphs use bullet points and formatting such as BOLD key information. Enable the reader to see your key skills and qualifications relevant to the position you are applying.

Gill Brown,  Database & Contracts Manager

"I like a CV that the text is formatted well, with no fancy text or images and the information is grouped together and not dotted all over the CV."

Ensure the information is allocated to the correct area of your CV to save the reader having to search for the information. You want them to see your key attributes even when they skim read it.

Jane Stevens,  Senior Business Development Consultant

“In my experience the perfect CV needs to be short and to the point. A brief personal information section followed by key skills and achievements should be to the point and pertinent, as should training and qualifications.

Tailor your CV for the position you are applying for, avoid rambling - work history should be concise, any work history beyond the last five years needs to be very short and just give a flavour of skills used and role performed."

Often roles dictate that certain qualifications/training are essential and if they are not listed, can prompt a rejection when really the candidate was, indeed, suitable.

Highlight your skills and experience relevant to the specific role you are applying for, you want to show you are well matched for the position they are recruiting.

Matt Hancock,  Senior Business Development Consultant

"3 key achievements listed for every role and 5 key responsibilities, Font Size 10 or 11, Arial. Justified text, consistently formatted and margined properly. Clear and Concise with correct dates of work history."

Make sure your achievements and your key responsibilities feature in your work experience section. Correct formatting is essential from font style to font size to ensure it is easy to read. Ensure your work dates are correct.

Phil Fanthom,  Managing Director

"It is essential that you tailor your CV to the position you are applying for, highlighting that you have the relevant skills and experience that the client is seeking. This is the most important aspect of applying for any job - yet jobseekers still try to send generic CVs. Your interview rate will improve if you take the time to tailor your CV for each role.

Avoid using Microsoft templates as they carry formatting which can affect how your CV will look when it is registered online. Also avoid using tables and boxes."

You MUST tailor your CV for the position you are applying for - highlighting that you have the skills and qualifications they are looking for.

Include a summary of other skills (not essential for this particular position) at the back of your CV - only if you have room. Remember maximum of 3 pages.

Avoid Microsoft templates and text boxes and tables as this can affect how the CV looks on different computers and online.
